Hi folks

Thanks to everyone who has already picked up a copy of “Elephant Dance”, on shelves now across Australia!  I’ve been waffling on about human-elephant conflict on radio all week, but today I reached new highs by talking about elephant farts on national radio.  If you missed it, you can listen to my chat with Richard Aedy on ABC’s Life Matters by clicking here.Cover Elephant Dance low res

News from Assam, India

It happens all the time in India…  Elephants get injured by people as they venture into tea gardens and rice paddies, areas that were once elephant habitat, now human territory.  This poor elephant was injured and then got trapped in a tea garden trench.  The horrible thing is this is happening all the time.

http://www.wti.org.in/current-news/090826_elephant_severely_injured_in_conflict_gets_treatment.html

The good news is that there are vets like Pranab Boro and Anjan Talukdar from the Wildlife Trust of India who risk their own lives to save these elephants.  This is why we’re running the Elephant Extravaganza on 19th October.  Some of the funds raised on the night will help support the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation in Assam, India, where Anjan and Pranab work, and where elephant babies orphaned by the escalating human-elephant conflict have a chance at life.  Please come along and lend your support or click here to find out how you can help Animal Works online!

Tony Park & I – this Friday 4th Sep

Sorry folks, I was having a pregnancy moment and got the day wrong!  Tony and I are talking at St Ives Library this Friday 4th September, not Tuesday.

Another great read about Africa, “Ivory Moon”

And while I’m at it, if you haven’t picked up your own copy of Sally Henderson’s latest book, Ivory Moon, get down to your local bookstore and get yourself one!  Sally and I have been great mates for a long time (well before we ever dreamed we’d get to be published writing about Africa) and she writes about Africa with an insider’s knowledge and a truly deep and beautiful appreciation of its mysteries and wonders.  If you loved her first book “Silent Footsteps” you don’t want to miss this one…

Ivory Moon Sally Henderson coverSally’s long love affair with Africa and its elephants was brought to life in the bestselling Silent Footsteps. Her new book Ivory Moon continues that affair in one of the most inhospitable landscapes on the planet…

When Sally and her husband Jer volunteer to run a remote safari camp in the parched Namib Desert where existence depends on the life-giving fog from the Skeleton Coast, she has no idea if it is heaven or hell that awaits her. Sally is tested by the camp staff, who come from many different tribes, and challenged by the intractable men’s men who make Africa their hunting ground.

Vivid and immediate, Sally’s depiction of the wildlife that rules Africa is unparalleled. Ivory Moon takes us into the heart of a strange desert world where nothing is as it seems.

Tony Park & I talking lions & elephants

If you fancy a yarn about Africa this Friday 4th September and you live in Sydney, pop into the St. Ives library (St. Ives Shopping Centre) at 10.30am where fellow Pan Macmillan author and Africa addict Tony Park and I will be there talking about Africa and our new books.  Most of you will know Tony’s African novels (he’s Australia’s Wilbur Smith and his latest one “Ivory” is out now), but now he’s trying his hand at non-fiction with what is bound to be a ripping yarn about South Africa’s lion whisperer, Kevin Richardson.  It’s called “Part of the Pride” and it’s out in September.  I’ll be talking about my soon to be released book about human-elephant conflict in Africa and India, “Elephant Dance”, and showing a few of my favourite photos and stories.  Hope to see you there!

Part of the Pride Tony Park cover shot

Kevin Richardson has been dubbed “The Lion Whisperer”. It’s a title he doesn’t like, but how else can you label his extraordinary relationship with these beautiful yet deadly animals? As a zoologist and animal behaviourist, he works at a lion park in South Africa. Here he has formed incredible relationships with the big cats – playing with them, lying down with them, being included in every part of their lives as “one of the pride”. Those who work with lions in the traditional way – using sticks, chains and coercion – call him crazy. But Kevin’s ability to get inside the head of a lion, using love, patience and a unique empathy, have kept him safe in situations that would result in certain death to anyone else. This is Kevin’s incredible story. How a man could become part of a lion pride, and a fascinating insight into the lives of one of the world’s most beautiful and powerful animals.

The Elephant Extravaganza!

Hi folks!

I’ve finally joined the modern age, got myself a proper website (www.tammiematson.com) and have a new book coming out in a couple of months called “Elephant Dance”.  To coincide with its launch in October, I’m getting together with some great friends of mine, artist Nafisa Naomi and film producer Steve van Mil, for an evening of elephantine fun and merriment at the Arthouse Hotel, Pitt Street, Sydney, and this is your official invitation!

The Elephant Extravaganza is on 19th October and it’s all about raising funds and awareness for elephant conservation.  Nafisa Naomi is generously donating most of the proceeds from the incredible elephant artworks she’s created to this great cause.  You can see some of her work at www.animalworks.com.au – there is something for every budget and every home needs an elephant in it, right?  It’s good luck!  Plus on the night there will be a special preview of Animal Media Australia’s human-elephant conflict documentary, “Elephant Wars” and also plenty of signed copies of my books up for grabs.

$20 gets you in the door, including a couple of drinks from the bar and nibbles.  Tickets are available through the Arthouse Hotel or at the door on the night.  Once you’re there you stand to win a whole load of prizes in our giant elephant competition ($20/ticket).  Top prize in the competition is a Namibian safari for two people with Wilderness Safaris and Epic Private Journeys worth over $7000!!  There are loads of other prizes too and all proceeds go towards elephant conservation…

So put the night in your diary – 19th October, 6pm!  More details will be coming soon…  but in the meantime, log onto the Animal Works website for more information – www.animalworks.com.au .  Please pass this on to anyone you know who might be interested in coming along and put it in your diary!  If you can’t see the flyers below, you might need to view in html or drop me a line and I’ll send you them in jpeg.

Cheers, Tammie
