September gigs coming up in Sydney & Brisbane

If you live in the vicinity of Randwick library in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, my partner in Animal Works Nafisa Naomi and I will be having a yarn about how we use different forms of communication to spread the word about the plight of endangered species.  It’s on 15th September from 7pm-8.30pm at Randwick library, 1st floor, Randwick shopping centre as part of the library’s Extraordinary Women series.

And in Brisie, I’ll be discussing human wildlife conflict and all sorts of other things related to animals with fellow African authors Sally Henderson, Annette Henderson and Ace Bourke (if you haven’t seen his lion youtube video you have to check it out here – it’s awesome!).  We’re on three panels which are bound to be interesting with a roll up like that – a couple for kids and one for grown ups – at the Brisbane Writers’ Festival on 1st (12.20pm – kids) and 2nd September (12.20pm – kids & 2.30pm – adults).  You can buy tickets here.

Looking forward to seeing  you there!

Obama meets Cambodia’s elephant crusader

Stories like this make you realise it’s people like this from grass roots communities who make the world a better place.  Have a read.

Escape to Kaziranga

It hasn’t been until very recently that I even started looking outside Africa for amazing wildlife experiences.  I mean, with places like the Okavango Delta and Serengeti out there, why would you go anywhere else?  But my thoughts changed a little once I went to the north east Indian state of Assam, in particular this state’s wildlife jewel, Kaziranga National Park.   (more…)

The elephant and the lizard

Now I’ve seen some weird things in the animal kingdom but this takes the cake!  An Indian elephant playing with a lizard… Check out the amazing pictures here.  You have to wonder what is going through this elephant’s brain, let alone the poor old lizard!

Volunteering in Namibia – special deal

People are always emailing me asking how to get more hands on experience in conservation or how to simply ‘do more’ than make a donation (ie. get your hands dirty!).  One great option that I always recommend as an excellent first timer’s to Africa volunteering experience is Harnas in Namibia.  It’s a pretty special place where you can get up close and personal with all sorts of wild animals, including cheetahs, lions and baboons, and help them on their long journey of rehabilitation before being set free.  (more…)

Elephant Dance & Dry Water

Have you read my latest book, “Elephant Dance”?  What did you think of it and/or my first book, “Dry Water”?

Leave me a comment here and let other animal lovers and Africaphiles see what you have to say!

Best Africa Books

The only thing better than being in Africa is reading a really good book about Africa.  I just read one that I just have to share with you.  I picked it up in Johannesburg airport so I’m not sure it’s in Australia yet.  It’s called “The Elephant Whisperer” and it made me want to go and buy a game farm!  (more…)

Spiral horned antelope of Africa

Did you know that the bongo is the rarest antelope in Africa?    You know, as a long time impala lover you know I adore my antelope… so I couldn’t resist sharing this article with you from We Are Wilderness on some of the coolest antelope in Africa, those with spiral horns.  One of the best things about going to new parts of Africa for me is seeing the variation in the four legged critters.  (more…)

Get involved

People often email me to ask what they can do from our part of the world to help the elephant situation.  I mean, there aren’t a lot of elephants in Australia and there are a lot of good causes seeking your help, so what can you really do?  The answer is, a lot!

A really nice place to stay in Windhoek, Namibia

Vertigo Boutique Hotel in Windhoek has only just opened this year and it’s not well advertised yet, which makes it a really hidden gem in the increasing number of hotels that Namibia’s capital city has to offer.  It’s owned by a family of Italians (Mary Ann and Antonio and their three daughters) who are just about the most hospitable people you’re ever likely to meet and the in house manager Morris couldn’t do enough to help us enjoy our stay.  (more…)
